Sheet Piling 

 Steel sheet piling is a rolled structural steel section with interlocks on the flange tips which enable the joining of sections to form a continuous wall.

ESS (CE) Ltd has been successfully installing sheet piles for over 20 years for both permanent and temporary applications that cover the entire range of projects in the construction industry.

With technological advancement more modern/environmentally sensitive methods of installation can be tailored to individual site requirements

Side Grip Hammer

Side grip vibratory hammers provide the capability/flexibility of an excavator for reach and access to install proposed sheet piles or king posts. The 'side grip' function allows piles to be pitched/gripped on the side enabling the excavator to pitch and drive piles up to 13m long. These machines are suitable for specific types of ground condition's, however by treating the ground prior to driving the piles (pre-augering) or impact driving the piles afterwards, from years of experience with these machines ESS (CE) Ltd can advise on the suitability of the rig in relation to the anticipated ground condition's and any other environmental condition's.

Telescopic leader rigs are the most commonly used item of plant for installing sheet piles, due to their all-round performance  in conjunction with the vibratory hammer and auger drive unit. These rigs can handle pitch, drive and extract sheet piles  up to 22m long. The flexibility in changing from driving to augering and even pressing makes them the most versatile piece  of plant to install sheet piles. The telescopic leader rig can be used to 'press' the piles using the hydraulic presser to provide a vibration less method of sheet pile installation

Conventional Works 

One of the original method of installing sheet piles before advances in plant, but with the improved plant possibly the least method used in the modern day. Using  spud piles with cross head beams and walkways a gate and frame system is set up using a crane suspended hammer to allow the piles to be installed and driven whilst keeping their vertically.

 

This method of installation is typically carried out when limited and/or restricted access for plant is a specific criteria. Quite often used for marine, bridge and  infrastructure works environment's

Telescopic Leader Rig

Telescopic leader rigs are the most commonly used item of plant for installing sheet piles, due to their all-round performance  in conjunction with the vibratory hammer and auger drive unit. These rigs can handle pitch, drive and extract sheet piles  up to 22m long. The flexibility in changing from driving to augering and even pressing makes them the most versatile piece  of plant to install sheet piles. When in augering mode the rig can also be used for king post installation. The leader rigs come  in different sizes/weight's each with a maximum pile handling height.

 

State of the art technology and variable moment hammers ensure that vibration oscillations are reduced to a minimum. Consequently, a considerable reduction in vibration is achieved during pile installation and extraction. In addition, the rigs  have very short set up times (less than 30 mins from transport to operation configuration), and the tracked carrier system  offers high mobility on all construction sites, reducing in width with the retractable undercarriage to make transportation  and access easier.

Giken Press

This state-of-the-art, silent pile press enables piles to be installed and extracted in highly sensitive locations; they are compact in size so are also ideally suited to height restricted sites i.e. in buildings or under bridges and can press piles into most soil types although, depending on stiffness/density, pre-augering or water jetting is sometimes required.

After installing the first 4 piles, it travels along the installed piles using the reactionary force to press the next pile in (instead of using a hammering or vibratory action) thus creating very little noise or vibration.  It’s called self-travelling as unlike other pile drivers it doesn’t need any other piece of machinery to assist it – apart from a crane that lifts the pile into the chuck of the pile press.
